"I'm not as thick-skinned as I thought I was"

Have you ever been told to "grow a thicker skin" or "not take things so personally"? It's a common piece of advice given to people who are sensitive or emotional. But what if you thought you had thick skin, only to find out that you're not as tough as you thought you were?

Here are some things to consider if you're feeling like you're not as thick-skinned as you thought you were:

  1. It's okay to be sensitive: Being sensitive is not a weakness. It's a trait that can be both a blessing and a curse. Sensitive people are often more empathetic and compassionate, which can make them great friends and partners. However, it can also make them more vulnerable to criticism and negative feedback.

  2. Thick skin vs. thin skin: According to a study, people with depression tend to have thinner skin, meaning they are more transparent and absorb more into the grey matter of their brain than people with thicker skin. Thick-skinned people, on the other hand, tend to brush aside emotional upset in favour of simply "handling" the situation and maintaining a calm demeanour. However, experiments show that thick-skinned people don't actually feel their feelings any less.

  3. Dealing with criticism: If you're feeling like you're not as thick-skinned as you thought you were, it might be helpful to develop some tools for dealing with criticism. One tool is to separate fact from interpretation. When someone criticises you, it's easy to interpret it as defining a core truth about you. However, it's important to remember that their assessment is just their opinion and doesn't necessarily reflect objective reality.

  4. It's okay to be vulnerable: Vulnerability is often seen as a weakness, but it can actually be a strength. Being vulnerable allows you to connect with others on a deeper level and can lead to more meaningful relationships. It's okay to let your guard down and show your emotions.

  5. Everyone has different levels of sensitivity: It's important to remember that everyone is different. Some people have thicker skin than others, and that's okay. It's important to accept yourself for who you are and not compare yourself to others.

In conclusion, if you're feeling like you're not as thick-skinned as you thought you were, it's important to remember that being sensitive is not a weakness. It's okay to be vulnerable and to show your emotions. Developing tools for dealing with criticism can also be helpful. Remember that everyone is different, and it's important to accept yourself for who you are.
