Let’s spare a thought for Philip Schofield!

Phillip Schofield, a British television presenter, came out as gay in February 2020. The announcement was met with an outpouring of support from fans and colleagues alike. Schofield had been married to his wife, Steph, for 27 years and has two adult daughters. He has been a presenter on ITV's This Morning for many years. In interviews following his announcement, Schofield revealed that he had suspected he was gay when he got married, but suppressed his feelings because he was happy. He said that his wife had been supportive and that they have no secrets from each other. Schofield did not reveal if he was currently in a relationship with a man. The announcement was described as a "huge moment" for the gay community by LGBT activists. Many people shared their own experiences of coming out or living with a partner who had come out. While coming out can be a difficult and emotional experience, it is important to remember that everyone's journey is different and that there is no right or wrong way to come out. It is important to support and accept people for who they are, regardless of their sexuality or gender identity.

While the world, ex co-hosts and a wealth of other celebrity names, kick Philip Schofield, as he falls from the lofty heights of social adoration and respect, to the stinking gutter curb, lets just spare a thought for Philip, and share some empathy to what he is going through.

It's easily forgotten that homosexuality in the UK was only decriminalised in 1967. That’s only 56 years ago. That’s within Philip’s own life span of 61 years alive, and even then, it only decriminalises private sexual activity between men over the age of 21, ensuring homosexuality is continued to be deemed a criminal activity for teenage boys exploring their sexuality.

Set to be booed at the British Soap Awards on Saturday, the final nail in his coffin of a dead TV career, Philip is currently seeking refuge in the arms of his friend of 20 years, Simon Schofield (no relation).

With echoes of his relationship with Matthew McGreevy, who he met while Matthew was only 10, Philip first started his friendship with Simon when Simon was 17 and Philip 41.

“After a follower queried whether there was a deeper meaning to his use of the term 'mate', Phillip hit back: 'Yes! A mate! That's what they still call family friends who you've known for 20 years and come round to check if you're OK.'”

No matter what we feel towards Philip Schofield, we must understand the pressures and strains Philip has been enduring, having to hide a secret all his life.

Leaving his wife after 27 years, abandoning two grown daughters, and doing it all in front of the world's press couldn’t have been easy!

Living a lie and denying one's sexuality makes a significant mental health impact on gay men, especially when they marry women and raise children.

Philip Schofield knows the perils and downsides of living a lie and the mental health anguish of denying one's sexuality:

  • Feelings of guilt and shame: Many gay men who marry women and raise children do so because of societal pressure or family expectations. They may feel guilty for not being able to live up to these expectations and ashamed of their sexuality, leading to low self-esteem and depression.

  • Fear of being discovered: Living a lie requires constant vigilance to hide one's true self. This fear of being discovered can lead to anxiety, stress, and paranoia.

  • Strained relationships: Being in a marriage where one partner is gay can create tension, resentment, and emotional distance between the couple. It can also lead to confusion and hurt for the spouse who is not aware of their partner's true sexuality.

  • Lack of intimacy: Denying one's sexuality can lead to a lack of physical and emotional intimacy, causing feelings of loneliness and isolation.

  • Impact on children: Growing up in a family where one parent is gay and living a lie can have a significant impact on children. They may feel confused, betrayed, and angry when they discover the truth, leading to trust issues and emotional distress.

It is crucial to acknowledge that living a lie and denying one's sexuality can have severe mental health impacts on gay men. Seeking help from mental health professionals, support groups, and loved ones can be helpful for those struggling with these issues. It is also essential for society to recognize and accept all forms of sexuality and gender identity to prevent the harm caused by societal pressure and expectations. Discrimination and stigma against LGBTQ+ individuals must be eliminated to ensure that they can live their lives authentically and without fear of judgement or persecution.

So lets spare a thought for Philip Schofield today! Give him a break!

It's not as if he’s been found guilty and convicted of 11 sexual offences against children, and sentenced to 12 years in prison, like his brother has just been!
